ArcoStream provides transcoding services for a variety of uses. Transcoding is the process by which one file format is converted into another file format for Internet playback. Files in this showcase are served by one of two methods: the first is Flash Media Streaming and the other Progressive Download. In streaming, content is played as the data is received from the server versus waiting for the entire file to download. Users may also fast forward and rewind through the clip with minimal buffering. Live webcasting may only be served using streaming, not progressive download.
ArcoStream's streaming services save you from paying for extra bandwidth that would be used if users downloaded the entire clip without watching the entire video on their machine.

The Maryland United Way had some great videos made that showcase the things that they are up to in 2009. They came to ArcoStream so we could help them encode the files for optimum quality and performance, and also asked us to host the files on our network. We were also able to assist Maryland United Way by consulting their flash developer on how to best implement the player for maximum cross-platform compatibility.
Together, ArcoStream and the Maryland United Way are delivering their message of hope all over the world.
MutualArt.com is using our network to host various types of static files. They have caching, and flash streaming services from ArcoStream. The above video is one of many tutorials, help videos, features, and clips that MutualArt.com has available to it's membership. Together with ArcoStream, MutualArt.com is able to deliver these video files reliably and quickly across the network, with nearly zero buffer time.
MutualArt.com's server cluster is also under much less stress as all static files (images, css files etc.) are cached through ArcoStream, saving the company money on dedicated servers. This method of image and static caching is one of the newest methods for today's modern small business to reduce server and internet costs using ArcoStream.
The Starfish Television Network is a revolutionary broadcast channel that gives voice to charitable organizations and helps them to better fulfill their missions. Part of their strategy is to offer a live 24/7 Flash video stream to anyone who would like to tune in at StarFishTV.org. ArcoStream helped them plan their infastructure to accomodate this output to live flash that matches their broadcast signal in real time. We also helped them implement an open source flash container as the player to save them development cost.
Flash video streaming is quickly becoming the most reliable method for cross platform compatibility. With the advancement in codec technology, flash containers will be able to play nearly any media type across all platforms as well. This has already begun with the widespread adoption of H.264 codec in video on demand and live broadcast situations. ArcoStream recommended that StarfishTV use the trusty On2 VP6 flash video codec to encode and stream with, and now StarfishTV enjoys one of the most reliable 24/7 live video streams available today.

For the most effective demonstration of how this works, there are a few things we'll need to show you. The ArcoStream logo next to this paragraph resides in a protected directory in our CDN cloud. Here is the location:
http://fcdn.arcostream.com/j4n8k6f7/cds/candee2/secure/arcostream_logo_showcase.png
The /secure/ directory is a directory that we have configured to protect all content with a shared secret. The content must be verified by a generated hash in your web application before the viewer will see it rendered in their browser. After generating the hash, the image can be displayed with the following link, but is only available for 15 seconds. After 15 seconds, the link will indicate "Not Authorized," however you'll notice that the image that did display on the right has the exact same URL and did get rendered.
http://fcdn.arcostream.com/j4n8k6f7/cds/candee2/secure/arcostream_logo_showcase.png?expires=1268395198&token=9228f445cbb0e9bfc05cd09cb55c3830
These signed links will expire after 15 seconds, effectively eliminating all sharing of this file other than the initial rendering of the page. If it has been more than 15 seconds, you will not be authorized to view the content with the signed URL. You will be able to fully customize the amount of 'time to live' for your content, and maintain full control of your content delivery expenditure with your new protection! This method of signing works on all file types, including applications, PDF files, FLV, MP4 and WMV files, playlists, anything!
